The Space Crusaders: A 40k Khorne Renegade Warband

On board their ancient Space Hulk ready for deployment on a rural planet with one and only one objective: Kill them all - blood for the blood god, skulls for the skull throne - Kill them all!

The warband: One champion and four renegades (so far)

The Renegades: Four classic renegades from the late 80s. I painted these in a quite different style. Objective was an ancient, battle scarred and evil looking appearance. (Updated pics of these)

  1. Whoa!

Really excellent, your marines look like they came from a Giger's drawing. So dark and evil, they really look like they've spent the last millenium in a spacehulk waiting for revenge....
I'm painting these very minis at the moment, very vey inspiring.

    1. Thanks! Yes - I saw them in black undercoat and curious to see the next stage - especially the Dreadnought. (BTW: I'll update the photos tomorrow of the Renegades) /Hans

  2. Lovely looking set you have there, I have always liked the classic renagades. Evil looking but not covered in stupud spikes and skulz.

Intrestingly I havent seen that champion from the rear before. He looks like he has some sort of khornate fart re-cycler on his back :)

Nice looking unit looking forward to seeing what else you come up with for them.

    1. Thanks - Like your sense of humor: "khornate fart re-cycler" - LOL LOL LOL. Looking at the mini I agree this is the only logical conclusion. Thx/Hans

  4. Those renegades are beautiful, Mr Hans!

I agree with those above - they are spite and revenge personified. Very well done.

  7. Just saw these while browsing - love the look of the renegades. How did you go about getting that almost insectoid look and colour to the armour?

    1. Thanks Idstone (sorry for late reply - been out of the hobby for a while).

The paint job was quite experimental and can't recollect exactly what I did. Something along these line are probably not too far from the truth though:

      1) Black base coat
      2) Next coat was silver, red and black. I used the mini as a palette mixing the colors into different shades directly on the mini while the paint was still wet.
      3) Super heavy washes - Think I used orange (not sure)
      4) Used a sponge do dab on color (black and silver)
      5) Some washes again
      6) Highlights
      7) Used Pigment powder and pigment fixer
      8) Final highlights

      Cheers/Hans

    2. No worries - thanks for the reply!

I thought you might have done some blending on the mini, and it's where I started when I tried to recreate your paintjob, but I didn't spot the silver in the mix. The orange wash was another element I didn't catch, but I can see where it's giving that nice depth of colour to the figures now.

I'm tied up with an Ork project just now, but I'll have another crack at my own version of your work here after that. Great stuff!

    3. There is some blending as well. I guess when I wrote highlights I meant highlights-blending.

Come to think of it I should be Bronze and not silver and as the main color in the mix.

Let me know if you have any specific questions - more than happy to share :)

      Thx/Hans
